In 2014, Alvin Green was one of thousands of people — a disproportionate number of them Black and Latino men — serving a life sentence for non-violent drug offenses. His only chance at setting foot outside a federal prison was asking the president to commute his sentence.
But the process of asking for clemency isn’t a standard part of the law school curriculum, and a successful clemency petition is a rare thing, even for seasoned criminal defense attorneys.
